Frequently Asked Questions
What is an alcohol server permit and how can you obtain it in Utah?
An alcohol server permit is a license that allows an individual to legally serve, sell or handle alcoholic beverages in a permitted location.
Like many states, Utah requires this permit to ensure that employees understand alcohol laws and regulations, how to check IDs correctly and know when to stop or refuse service to prevent sales to minors or intoxicated customers. The certificate serves as proof that you are committed to serving the public responsibly.
To get your Utah alcohol server permit, you must:
- Complete an approved training course: The course must be administered by a state-approved provider.
- Pass the alcohol server exam: You must score of at least 70% to pass, but you'll have unlimited test attempts.
- Receive your permit: Once you pass, your certificate will be available for immediate download.
- Maintain validity: Permits are valid for three years and must be renewed by retaking an approved course and passing the exam before expiration.
What is the difference between on-premises and off-premises alcohol training?
If you serve drinks at bars, nightclubs, restaurants, or establishments where alcohol is served you'll need the on-premises alcohol server course. This training is mandatory for bartenders, waitstaff and any staff handling alcohol where customers enjoy a drink on-site. Employees selling sealed beer for off-site enjoyment must take off-premises alcohol training. This requirement applies to workers at grocery stores, convenience shops, and any venue where on-site drinking isn't allowed.
Is alcohol training mandatory in Utah?
Yes. In Utah, employees serving or handling alcohol must take mandatory training. On-premises servers have 30 days from their start date to satisfy this requirement. Off-premises staff selling sealed beer need E.A.S.Y. certification before they begin sales.
Who is required to have an alcohol server license?
In Utah, anyone pouring or selling alcohol must first complete an alcohol server education program. The kind of license you'll need depends on whether you're selling or serving drinks for on-site consumption or for enjoyment off-site.
However, similar rules for licensing apply across the state.
You need certification if you:
- Serve alcohol for customers to drink on-site
- Sell beer for off-site consumption
- Manage or supervise alcohol service or sales at a licensed establishment

Is the E.A.S.Y. Off-Premises Alcohol Certification course valid for liquor store employees?
No, this off-premises alcohol certification course is designed for employees of grocery stores, convenience stores and other businesses that sell sealed beer to go. We do not currently sell a separate training that is approved for liquor store employees.
How long is Utah alcohol certification valid?
Both courses are valid for three years from the date the program is completed. You must retake either course every three years to maintain your certification.
How do I renew my permit?
Utah's alcohol server permit renewal process is simple. Before your certification expires, follow the same application steps as your initial permit: enroll in a state-approved training program, complete the coursework and pass the final exam.
Your new certificate will be issued immediately upon passing the exam, and will be valid for another three years. You must repeat this process prior to your current permit's expiry date to continue selling or serving alcoholic beverages in Utah.
What happens if I sell or serve alcohol with an expired permit?
In Utah, selling or serving alcohol with an expired alcohol server permit is a violation of state law. You could face fines, disciplinary action from your employer and possible suspension or loss of your ability to work in establishments that sell alcohol. It's important to renew your permit before it expires to stay compliant.
